Time to review another book. The last book I reviewed was one of my favorite in the Goosebumps HorrorLand series, so how could this one possibly be bad?
Dr. Maniac vs. Robby Schwartz (review)
(This is a review, not a synopsis. For a recap, check out this page.)
Talk about a stark contrast. The previous book I reviewed was super good, and this one... This one isn't. It's hard to tell where to begin with this review. There's so much to say.
I guess I'll begin by describing our protagonist: the slightly annoying Robby Schwartz. Robby is a web-cartoonist. Next, I'll introduce our antagonist: the very annoying Dr. Maniac. You see, Dr. Maniac has one catchphrase throughout the book: "I’m not crazy — I’m a MANIAC!" ...However, the phrase is used so often that, by the end of the book, I was banging my head against a table every time he said it.
Next big problem: every event that happens in this book seems like it happens for no reason and without explanation. Why does Dr. Maniac come to life? Why does The Purple Rage think that feeding Robby to scorpions will help Robby's brother become un-kidnapped? Who online is reading a comic illustrated by a 12 year old?
But everything I've said so far is just the icing on the cake. Just read the "Spoilers" section, and you'll understand why I hate this book so much.
So what's the twist?
...The entire book was a part of Robby's comic, and everything was just a story.
EVERYTHING WAS JUST A STORY.
Are you kidding me?!?!?
The book pulls the same trick TWICE.
As if the book wasn't annoying enough already, the twist ending rubs it in your face. The final twist essentially tells the reader, "Hey, nothing in this entire book actually happened or mattered. I've just wasted your time."
Rating & Explanation
This is one of the first times a book has made me feel like I completely wasted my time. This book is easily the worst in the Goosebumps HorrorLand series (so far).
